The Urban Revolution & Why Hamilton Is Coming Out On Top
The economic challenges of recent years have had a profound effect on the New Zealand real estate market, with unemployment and inflation prompting many people to reconsider where they live.
Housing, employment, study and lifestyle opportunities are critical considerations which are propelling Hamilton to the top of the list.
It’s long been the case that internal migration has skewed north and in favour of our biggest cities, but it’s Hamilton specifically that’s cementing itself as the ‘sweet spot’ for those wanting to future-proof their families and their finances.
Urbanisation Done Right
It’s no secret that when cities grow, they can lose their soul. This has not been the case with Hamilton. It continues to grow in a very thoughtful way, leaning into its natural assets, like the Waikato River. The result is a city that gets more vibrant year-on-year and appeals to a very broad demographic. Unlike many cities that have experienced unplanned sprawl or haphazard development, Hamilton’s urbanisation has happened with a clear vision, balancing greenfield development with infill and higher density dwellings.
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs
A record number of Kiwis have been feeling insecure in their jobs of late, for good reason. You don’t have to look far to see signs of distress, from the media industry in Auckland, the public service in Wellington, mining on the West Coast, aluminium smelting in Southland and horticulture and forestry in the Bay of Plenty.
Hamilton hasn’t been spared completely but the future is looking decidedly brighter than elsewhere thanks to the city’s robust employment base which spans education, research, healthcare, technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.
High-profile projects – like the medical school and Ruakura Inland Port – have also gone a long way to putting Hamilton on the map as an employment hotspot in recent times.
Where It’s Easy To Get Around
A huge part of Hamilton’s appeal has always been its proximity to major economic hubs, Auckland and Tauranga. Recent investment in the wider transport network has made it even easier to travel between these cities and Hamilton’s relative centrality and affordability make it the preferable home base for many.
Where Life Just Feels Good
It can be difficult to pinpoint precisely what makes a city more ‘livable’ than others. The truth is it’s rarely one thing, rather a coming together of many different components.
Hamilton stands out for the way it has stayed focused on the natural environment as it develops. From the generous greenspaces, riverside parks and developments to the rich gully network, the result is a city that makes you feel connected to nature, and it feels good.
If you're curious about Hamilton’s growth and the investment opportunities it presents, both now and into the future. We’d love to hear from you.
